Oxford is located just over the River Isis which is a part of the river Thames, and 50 miles from London. It is the oldest student city in Britain with an atmosphere that brings together ancient architecture with a modern lifestyle.
Things to see and do in Oxford
Visit Carfax, which is thought to be the centre of the city and the name itself is taken from the French word ‘carrefour’ which is translated in English as crossroads. The Carfax tower, owned by the council is part of St. Martin’s Church which dates back to the 13th century. A ring of six bells is one of the features of this tower which has a height of 74 feet, with the bells chiming at every quarter of an hour. The city’s skyline can be viewed from the top of the tower.
Another attraction is the Clarendon Building which was designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor in the 18th century. It used to serve as a home to Oxford University Press where printing work was carried out. It stands out in Broad Street and has other attractions close by.
Pay a free visit to the Pitt River Museum which is based on the themes of anthropology and ethnology set out within a Victorian setting. There is much to see and interact with in the building, such as shrunken heads and it can be reached through walking across the ground floor.
Visit the University of Oxford Botanical Gardens for a stroll around all things beautiful including great varieties of plants, flowers and birds chirping their special tunes. Admission is free on weekdays out of season but a small fee may otherwise apply.Take the opportunity to walk around the city with a guide you can download in MP3 format.
